What is so special about Fortnite?

I mainly play Sims4, but I don't understand why so many children play Fortnite. What is so special about the game?

I find this game horribly boring, why do you play something like that?

A matter of taste.

It differs fundamentally - just like PlebG or Apex - from shooters like RB6 or CS: GO, which take place on small maps. You land on a large map and have to survive in the hunger-games style. That was new at Minecraft at that time, if you can also discuss the game itself and the game mechanics.
