I think one main reason is that it is free? (Surely there skins or what there's there, money). Are children rather than teenagers the target audience?

For Fortnite there are real tournaments with decent prizes, so all the kids think they could get rich and never have to work properly, a bit like on YouTube.

Fortnite is free and constantly updated, 2 reasons for a large player base. The art style is unique and more child-friendly than some others (PUBG looks much more brutal, for example), which attracts even younger players. Then the game also jumped on the "Battle Royale hype", so they have adopted a concept that was extremely popular at the time. And last but not least, one must not forget that the component of the game is unique and otherwise does not appear in any game. The release on many platforms as well as crossplay between the platforms are of course also very beneficial.
Fortnite is available for free on all devices (PC, Playstation, X-Box, Smartphone) and even allows cross-play. Thus all friends can play together. Even those without a console.
