Never played it before, but when the movie Avengers Endgame was showing the game in a scene that was supposed to be funny, the whole movie was worth it.

Because Avengers has been trying at that point pushy to reach the young generation. It was not the end of the world but really killer.
Everything that gets a lot of hype is hated. Be it Vapes, Justin Bieber or just Fortnite. This course is just natural.
Because the exaggerated hype and these "cringe" dances of 8-12 year olds just annoy people. Although the hype is not that strong anymore, the game is still very popular with young people like Pokemon.

The paid duplicators of other games are making very good money to get these games only for a year at Epic Games, just so it does not end up on Steam and Co. Not only Borderlands 3 but also the other titles like Metro Exodus. Games like Anno 1800 are also affected, but you can still buy them at Uplay, because the "hate" was not that strong.
Metro Exodus was hit hard, as the game was the first and many were looking forward to it and now have to wait for 1 year.
