What if laptop overheats?

I usually play Fortnite on the PS4 but sometimes on the laptop and my graphics card is relatively bad, so the laptop gets loud and hot. One friend says that one should be careful, another says, in an emergency overheating the laptop switches off anyway. Only I do not feel so good.

Can that really be dangerous?
