Is it normal for my cell phone to heat up so much? What can I do against it?

I have the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra with an Exynos 990 chip (unfortunately 😭) and have noticed that my cell phone often gets very, very hot.

If I e.g. Playing Fortnite with a friend on the go, I have my hotspot on at the same time because I have infinite data volume and he doesn't (otherwise we can't play Fortnite on the go). Within a very short time my cell phone gets so hot (can hardly estimate how much ° C) that it even hurts to tap the screen for my fingers. It feels so hot that you can fry a fried egg on it😂! I can then put my cell phone on my stomach e.g. Do not lay anymore, as this would be excruciating pain. Often, my cell phone will already be watching or surfing hot with simple YouTube. I often notice that the menu is on my cell phone. For example, it is often the case that when I navigate through the settings, my cell phone chops and spins.

Isn't that normal? After all, do I have a high-end cell phone?!

If that's normal, I wonder what I should do when it's hot again. Should I buy a cell phone cooler or hold my cell phone under cold water, as it is water resistant (whereby my speakers always stop working for a few minutes, which is very annoying. Besides, that is definitely not good for the cell phone?! ). Are there any other methods, or should I just turn off the phone and put it in a cool place?

Is it even bad for the cell phone when it heats up? I notice that the Hz / FPS are turned down very quickly…

Even when I scroll through the menu or read websites, my S20 ultra heats up abnormally every time…

Can be a software thing. You can try:

Delete / end all background apps.

Disable all unused location services, online features, and automatic synchronization services.

Reset settings to the default settings

If that doesn't help, I would tap on hardware errors - complain - you probably still have a guarantee

Your third question about your smartphone regarding the heat… XD

A smartphone is usually not there to gamble with it all the time. If the device gets hot very often, it damages the hardware and the performance decreases steadily.

If you want to play Fortnite more often, the price can even be used to buy a PC / laptop that would run even better.

Your third question about your smartphone regarding the heat… XD

I have no hobbies! 😔

Ha

It is quite normal with the exynos that he has such heat problems

Ha

A good chip always delivers consistent performance even under continuous load

Ra

Does my 990 fall under this category?

Ha

I said better. So no

The high end exynos of the past years all had problems with heat and general performance / efficiency

Br

There's very little you can do about it. Unfortunately, this is due to the Exynos processor.

Fortnite is a challenging game and requires performance. This creates a lot of waste heat.

The mobile hotspot should also contribute well to the heat development.

The heavy use also warms the battery.

Smartphones are designed so that the heat can be dissipated via the display and the frame. The heat has to go somewhere.

Most Exynos SoC are not exactly known for their efficiency.

The good question platform doesn't seem to be very well adapted. For me, the cell phone also gets partially warm, and that also in the Firefox browser.

What are the options for cooling the cell phone again? Does it make sense to keep it under cold water?

go

Not cold water again… XD Even if it is designed to be kept under water. If the device gets hot, simply let it rest and have no complex applications.

Ge

Never cool the phone down quickly, it can damage the phone, you can only wait

Ra

Can't you order a cell phone cooler on Amazon and connect it to your cell phone?

Ma

It's only normal when you play Fortnite with 120 hearts but don't know if your cell phone can. If you only gamble with 60 hearts and it still gets hot, you just bought the wrong phone. There are enough phones with Snapdragon processors (or iPhones) that are even cheaper and do not have this problem. Like, for example, my iPad Pro 11 inch with the A12 Z processor gets warm at most when playing games.

Ra

But given the extent of me, that's not normal anymore?! Alone when navigating through the menu or reading websites my phone gets so hot that you can hardly hold it anymore. Wasn't that the case with my S10+ with Exynos?!

Ma

Well, there were many reports that an S20 with Exynos gets warm very often, but it shouldn't be the case with normal things.

Even with the rather poorly optimized Exynos, the overheating should not be so strong.

Is there an app that uses a lot of electricity? The heat mostly with this side effect.

I guess it's due to poorly optimized software. It is either the system itself or an app that runs in the background. An update of the respective software should solve the problem.

Ra

It's not because of that. Have looked at the consumption in the settings, but there was no eye-catching application…
