How does skill-based matchmaking work in Fortnite?

In Fortnite, players are assigned to players who have the same ability. Excluded is of course Arena. Something exists for solo, duos and squads. I want to find out if a friend of mine is in the same league. How can you approach to determine if I'm in the same skill league?

-when you die (placement)

-how many kills per round

Then the game expects and looks to whom you fit best
