My question is how can I play as a team in Fortnite? Because at the beginning you can choose whether you want to play solo or in a team. But if you don't have any friends in Fortnite, can you randomly be assigned to a team? Or do you have to play with a friend?

You can also start a round without friends. Depending on what you have set, you get random comrades.
Where you can select teams etc., you can choose whether you want to play with filling up or not filling up at the touch of a button (displayed depending on which console / PC: e.g. PS4 square).
With topping up there are 3 random players and not topping up you play alone against other teams.
There you can choose whether you want to fill the team or not. If so, players will be added randomly
